Mental Health Matters

By Umanga Nepal

While mental illness is regarded as a taboo in Nepal, the victims are also urged or pressurized to hide in ground zero. As a result of which, there has been a sharp increase in suicides yearly. According to a report published by WHO, Nepal sees 6840 suicides annually. But insiders know, the crisis is far more than the officially announced numbers. During the COVID-19 crisis, Nepal saw further more increase in suicide numbers. Unofficial figures state that more than 1000 Nepalese committed suicide during the Lockdown period itself. While fewer organizations are actively working for the cause, there has been far less effort from the government scale. In fact, mental wellbeing should be a subject matter in the initial curriculum for school students, but the expected reality is not to be seen anywhere.

Umanga Nepal believes in power of sharing. We are in a journey to create awareness about mental health and breaking the stigma.
